Star Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Triptii Dimri, Avinash Tiwary
Director: Vishal Bhardwaj
O’Romeo Movie Review Synopsis:
O’ROMEO is about a lover who turns into a killer.
The film is set in 1995. Ustara (Shahid Kapoor) lives in Mumbai with his grandmother (Farida Jalal) and his gang. He works for Ismail Khan (Nana Patekar) from the Intelligence Bureau. Ustara used to work for a gangster named Jalal (Avinash Tiwary), but after falling out with him, Khan gives him protection in return for doing bad jobs. One day, a mysterious woman named Afshan (Triptii Dimri) visits Ustara at his hideout. She asks him to kill three people – a lawyer named Anjum Ansari (Resh Lamba), a cop named Pathare (Rahul Deshpande), and finally Jalal. Ustara finds the request amusing and says no. Afshan steals a gun from one of Ustara’s men and tries to kill Ansari. She fails, and is about to be killed when Ustara saves her and kills the lawyer. Afshan’s determination becomes clear, so Ustara agrees to help. But many challenges lie ahead. The next target is Pathare, a cop, which could be dangerous. Khan may not like this plan. Also, Jalal is in Spain and is a dangerous man to kill. What happens next forms the rest of the story.
O’Romeo Movie Story Review:
The story is inspired by real events written by Hussain Zaidi.
The screenplay by Vishal Bhardwaj and Rohan Narula is impressive but has some rough parts. The dialogues are powerful.
Vishal Bhardwaj’s direction is strong.
He is known for making unique films but made a more mainstream movie with KAMINEY [2009]. With O’ROMEO, he returns to the genre. The film includes a lot of heartbreak and violence, which is popular now. Visually, the film is impressive. Ustara's hideout on a ship is unique. The use of 'ustara' for killing criminals adds an interesting twist to the action. Ustara’s story has both weirdness and sadness, but it’s Afshan who becomes the emotional heart of the movie. She is not a helpless woman and is willing to do anything. This makes the story more progressive. The film is 178 minutes long, but it keeps the audience engaged without being boring for long.
However, the film slows down in the second half.
The love story, which is central to the movie, becomes weak. Some violent scenes feel too similar to ANIMAL [2023]. The film is meant to be commercial, so some creative liberties are expected. However, a few plot points are too convenient and even a bit silly. The music is also not as good as it could be.
O’Romeo Movie Review Performances:
Even with some flaws, Vishal Bhardwaj gets strong performances from his actors.
Shahid Kapoor gives a powerful performance as Ustara, handling the complex character with care. Triptii Dimri delivers strong work again, matching her previous roles in LAILA MAJNU [2018], BULBBUL [2020], and QALA [2022]. She plays her character with subtle control, which adds to the strength of her performance. Avinash Tiwary makes an impactful late entry. Nana Patekar is reliable and brings some humor. Farida Jalal and Hussain Dalal (Chhotu) give cute performances. Vikrant Massey and Tamannaah Bhatia do well in cameos. Disha Patani adds glamour. Resh Lamba doesn’t get much to do. Rahul Deshpande is great as a cop who is also into classical singing. Anubha Fathpuria and Kashyap Shangari are okay. Natasha Bharadwaj leaves a mark.
O’Romeo Movie Music and Other Technical Aspects:
Vishal Bhardwaj is known for memorable music, but the songs in O’ROMEO are not as strong.
The songs ‘Aashiqon Ki Colony’, ‘Paan Ki Dukaan’, ‘Ishq Ka Fever’, and the title song are well integrated into the story. The background score, especially in Spain scenes, is excellent. Ben Bernhard’s cinematography (with additional work by Konstantin Minnich and Saurabh Goswami) adds depth to the visuals. Mustafa Stationwala’s production design is rich, and Maxima Basu’s costumes are realistic and elegant. Dani Del Rosario and Vikram Dahiya’s action is disturbingly graphic. Aarif Sheikh’s editing is good.
O’Romeo Movie Review Conclusion:
Overall, O’ROMEO has many well-made moments and great performances from the main cast.
However, the uneven writing and average music prevent it from making the bigger impact it aimed for. It is expected to have an average opening and will need a strong second day to stay in the race and cover its costs.
