Why is Himesh Reshammiya PAYING producers instead of charging them for his songs? Singer-composer reveals his business model; opens up about negotiations with Sooraj Barjatya for Yeh Prem Mol Liya

Himesh Reshammiya recently spoke with Komal Nahta about his music label, Himesh Reshammiya Melodies, and how it operates. When asked if he keeps the music rights to himself when signing a film, he said, "Yes.Whatever price I get as a composer, I will give it to you. It's the market price, and I will give it to you."

This model works in a unique way.

For instance, if a music label offers a producer Rs.5 crores for a film's music rights, and Himesh's fee as a composer is Rs.2 crores, he would give up his Rs.2 crore and pay the producer an additional Rs.3 crores to own the music rights for his label.

Himesh is currently composing songs for Sooraj Barjatya's upcoming film, Yeh Prem Mol Liya, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sharvari.

When asked if it was easy to convince the Barjatyas to give the music rights to his label, he said, "When they came to me, they asked me to just compose the music and said that we can talk about who will hold the rights.I replied, 'I will do a great job, and that's my model.' I am paying what the music rights are worth in the market."

Himesh admitted, "I agree that I may lose out on some films due to this model. The makers may feel the price is too high, or I may feel the price is too low. But I am not insecure.I am very happy with what I have."

If he had lost out on a film like Yeh Prem Mol Liya, he said, "That would have been okay.I don't have that desperation."

When asked who was the toughest to convince in the Barjatya family, he explained, "Convincing everyone wasn't easy.

But they are very good people. My main point was, 'First, listen to the music.Come, jam with me.If it doesn't work, that's fine.My songs will stay with me.First, do the work, yaar!' Let's be creatively clear. Then we should be monetarily clear. Then you need to give your best."

Besides Yeh Prem Mol Liya, Himesh has also composed music for upcoming films such as Mahesh Bhatt's "Naam – To Live Is War," the Emraan Hashmi-starrer "Gunmaaster G9," Anil Sharma's "Arjun Naga," and Vikram Bhatt's horror film "1920: Cold Winter." Interestingly, his music label, Himesh Reshammiya Melodies, holds the music rights to all these films, just as it does for Yeh Prem Mol Liya.
