India has still not won an Academy Award in the Best International Feature Film category. The country's official entry for the 98th Academy Awards, the film *Homebound*, did not get a nomination. The news was announced on Thursday, January 22, by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman. It was confirmed that the film directed by Neeraj Ghaywan didn't make the final list of five nominated films.
Even though the film didn't get a nomination, the people involved in making it felt proud and happy.
After the nominations were announced, producer Karan Johar shared his feelings on his Instagram story. He posted some pictures from the film and said he really admired the project and its director.
He wrote, "Proud!!!
Love you Neeraj Ghaywan for allowing us to bask in your light," showing that he believed the film was valuable beyond just winning an award.
Director Neeraj Ghaywan quickly thanked Johar for his support.
He shared Johar's post and said, "Thank you, @karanjohar! You have been an absolute rock. Couldn't have come this far without you. Love you."
Even though *Homebound* didn't get an Oscar nomination, it had a great showing around the world.
The film was produced by Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Adar Poonawalla under the Dharma Productions company. It first showed at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard section and received good reviews. It also did well at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it came in as the Second Runner-Up for the International Audience Choice Award.
The film is based on an article from the New York Times in 2020 by journalist Basharat Peer.
It stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor. The story is set during the time of the COVID-19 lockdown and follows two friends, Shoaib and Chandan, from poor backgrounds. They face discrimination and economic challenges while trying to find their way back home.
