After releasing movies like The Tashkent Files (2019), The Kashmir Files (2022) and The Vaccine War (2023), director Vivek Agnihotri is back with another serious film, The Bengal Files.
The makers got the censor certificate before the film was released, and in this article, Bollywood Hungama will focus on the process of getting that certificate.
The film wasn't approved by the Examining Committee of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
It was sent to the Reviving Committee (RC) because of its content. The RC approved the film but wanted some changes.
The RC asked the makers to remove the 'contemptuous' words about the transgender community and use better language instead.
They also asked to remove some pictures of well-known people and replace them. According to the RC's instructions, the makers provided documents proving the historical events shown in the film. They also gave consent letters from the parents of child actors involved in the film. Finally, they added a bigger disclaimer with a voiceover.
After making these changes, the CBFC gave the film an 'A' certificate.
The length of the film on the censor certificate is 204.30 minutes, which is 3 hours, 24 minutes and 30 seconds.
The censor certificate was given to the makers on June 25, 2025.
Two months later, on August 26, they made more changes on their own. They changed the word '100 years old' to 'an old woman who has dementia'. They added a photo in a phone scene and changed a phone video to something else. They also reduced the dialogue 'Bharat ko ek din iska bahut bada harzana dena padega'. The name Gopal Mukhopadhyay was removed from many places in the film.
They also cut a scene with a vulture and a baby and added a scene with an owl.
They changed text in several other scenes.
The makers made two additions.
One scene that showed the newspaper was made a little longer by one second. In another scene, they added text and a newspaper instead of another scene, which was 68 seconds long.
In total, they removed 1 minute and 42 seconds but added 1 minute and 44 seconds.
So the final length of The Bengal Files is 204.32 minutes, or 3 hours, 24 minutes and 32 seconds.
The Bengal Files is the longest Bollywood film in a long time.
It is one minute longer than Animal (2023) and four minutes longer than the movie Pushpa 2 (2024). It stars Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumaar, Pallavi Joshi, Saswata Chatterjee and others. It is set to be released on September 5.
