To make it a big blockbuster, Aditya Chopra went all out, spending a huge amount of money—Rs. 450 crores in total.
But this big gamble didn’t pay off. Industry insiders say YRF is going to lose a lot of money on War 2. They say they have only made around Rs. 150 crores from digital, satellite, and music sales. Even if they make the maximum possible from the box office, it would be about Rs. 140 crores. That means they are losing roughly Rs. 60 to 70 crores on the film.
This is the biggest loss YRF has faced in recent times, similar to their earlier project, Thugs of Hindostan, which starred Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan.
"The numbers from Monday are way down, and it's clear the franchise is over. The failure of War 2 has also affected the future plans for the YRF Spy Universe."
YRF is not the only one losing money.
The Telugu distributor, Naga Vamsi, is also taking a big hit. He bought War 2 for Rs. 90 crores, but he will only get less than Rs. 40 crores from the Telugu market. That means he’s losing over Rs. 50 crores on the film.
After a string of hits like Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War, Pathaan, and Tiger 3, War 2 is the first big failure in the YRF Spy Universe.
