Luv Ranjan on De De Pyaar De 2’s SHOCKING climax: “It was a trick from heist films; I was attempting a ROM-CON!”; adds, “If you don’t push boundaries, romcom genre will become stagnant… Pyaar Ka Punchnama’s ending was also unpredictable”

Following the success of De De Pyaar De (2019), the film's makers released a sequel, De De Pyaar De 2, in cinemas in November 2025. The first movie focused on a 50-year-old Ashish (Ajay Devgn), who falls in love with a 26-year-old Ayesha (Rakul Preet Singh). Things get complicated when Ashish introduces Ayesha to his family and his ex-partner, Manju (Tabu). In De De Pyaar De 2, Ayesha decides to tell her parents, Rakesh (R Madhavan) and Anju (Gautami Kapoor), that she's dating Ashish and even arranges a meeting between them. Rakesh and Anju are not happy with the age gap and try to stop the relationship. The couple break up before the final part of the movie, but there's a big twist in the last 15 minutes that surprises everyone. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, producer Luv Ranjan talked about this twist.

When asked if no one could have guessed the ending of De De Pyaar De 2, Luv Ranjan joked, “Yes, because I was attempting a rom-con!”

Some people were unsure about the ending being staged, especially the break-up of Ayesha.

While most people liked the twist, did he worry it might be too risky?

Luv Ranjan responded, “Yes, I did think about it.

At the same time, you have to push boundaries. Otherwise, you won’t be able to grow as a genre. It was a trick from heist films, if you think about it. What I mean is, you see that kind of twist in a heist film. When we were writing it, the whole idea was – what if we combined the language of a heist film with a romcom and a drama? Then what happens? (laughs)”

He continued, “When we made Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011), nobody expected such an ending.

It was never done before where all three boys left the three girls. When we made Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (2018), no one was able to predict its ending either.”

He added, “Romcom is a very predictable genre.

If you start talking about an idea for a romcom, I can tell you how it will end. This ‘how’ is very important in this genre. Hence, you need to try new things. Or else, the genre is going to become stagnant.”
