Chitrangda Singh reflects on OTT space, writing for women, and the rarity of meaningful female characters

In a special interview with source, actor Chitrangda Singh talked about the kind of roles women are getting on OTT platforms and whether the digital space is really making room for more complex female characters.

When talking about her latest work, Chitrangda said that roles with deep meaning and strong storytelling are still not common.

 “I’ve been saying this in all my interviews — it’s very rare to find a role that is written like this, one that is really important and interesting,” she said. She added that what made the character special was that it wasn’t written with a specific gender in mind. “It could have been anyone. The way it was written makes it even more special,” she explained.

Chitrangda admitted that OTT platforms have definitely opened up new possibilities for storytelling and allowed for more creative freedom.

 She said there was a lot of content being made today, which she saw as a good thing. “OTT is definitely writing a lot. There’s a lot of material being created, and that’s very encouraging,” she noted.

But she also pointed out that stories that are emotionally deep and well-developed characters are still rare.

 She praised director Honey Trehan for his deep connection to every part of his projects. “Honey is in love with his characters, the actors he works with, the story, the locations — he’s in love with everything. Working with someone like him is a privilege and doesn’t happen very often,” she shared.

Looking back on the experience, the actor admitted it had been a long time since she had enjoyed the creative process so much.

 “I honestly don’t remember the last time I enjoyed working this much,” she said, highlighting how rewarding the experience was for her as an actor.

While she acknowledged that the OTT space is slowly improving when it comes to writing for women, Chitrangda described the change as hopeful.

 She ended by saying that even though some progress is being made, roles that are written with real depth, sensitivity, and solid storytelling are still rare — which makes them all the more special when they do appear.
