16 Years of 99: Raj Nidimoru on making 99 without a safety net; says, “We didn’t know the rules”

How did Raj's first project come about? We were used to Mumbai, so it took  almost 4-5 years to proceed with this film. It's the first time we've reached town and no one knows. I only knew I could write a script. So we write 99,  the city shawls and leave Goa. As an engineer who wants to be a filmmaker, I thought that writing three scripts would allow me to create at least one. More scripts meant better chances. 99 was our first. But no one knew here either.

Have you convinced the producer to reset the 99?  Just making contact information and getting closer to the actors and producers, it all took forever. And I didn't know what to do. Also, we seemed to come from another world. We didn't appear to belong to Mumbai. People didn't know who we were. But they said the script was fun, fresh and had never read it before.

So, did 99 have no reference points? right. With no precedent, this proved to be both difficult and good at the same time. We couldn't say: It's like this movie. That made it even more difficult. All we knew was Anupam Mittal,  CEO of Shaadi.com. He was friends before we made the film. One day he said: »I made a film, so it started.

Has it been difficult to acquire this impressive lineup without  experience as a feature film maker? absolutely. We had no  way of proving that we were filmmakers. So we decided to make a short film based on  the city's Shor. There was a complete script, but I chose some of it and took a photo over the weekend. This short film came out very well. It became our business card. It went to many festivals and we showed it  in Bombay to see who would bite. Based on this, we began the fight. And before we knew it, we had a really cool ensemble: Kunal Khemu, Vinod Khanna, Boman Irani,  Cyrus Broocha were the first to make feature films. It was really fun.

Was it difficult to lay out the 99? Publications were another major issue. There was  no money for marketing. I don't think there were any newspaper ads at all. It was only 10 magazines in the city. There is no TV spot or radiation. It just opened...and sat there.

The opening must have crushed you and DK.

No one knew it, so we thought it had fallen on the first day. It opened almost perfectly. We were feeling unwell on Friday and gave up. But  things changed until Sunday. We visited the packed theatre and it was a relief. Mundpropaganda is strong and the movie has been running for several weeks. In this one publication, I experienced all sorts of emotions. So a happy ending? Yes, it ultimately made me happy  how the film went. It also had a wonderful life after death. People still like to remember it. Every time the 99 anniversary comes, you get sweet news. The trailer had some great lines. There is one difference between 99 and 100. It's just one thing, but it's a big thing. It really sums it up. A lot has happened with this set and we learned a lot. We have grown as a team.

They had quite a team.  Yes, dk, sita menon and I joined. Since then, we have remained on the team. Filming was very fun. 99 is the only film made with Super 35 film stock. Digital was already mainstream, but we wanted to make a film because we felt it could be our last chance. It was very cool. I didn't know the rules for filmmaking. I only did what I wanted to do.

You really carved your own room in this movie.

It turns out that  there were no crime thrillers in Hindi cinemas at the time. So we said we should do something that isn't there. So it was kind of  historical fiction in a strange way. We  linked it to a real bet and created a background story tailored to the fix scandal. It was an original idea. enjoy.

That wouldn't have been  such a sensitive idea. Want to go to grass?  Yes, it took me a long time to crack the script. We  basically had to write our first real Hindi feature film and find the structure, highlights, everything. I was very satisfied. Interestingly, when we worked on 99, we started jumping between scripts, and although we didn't know why,  it turned out to be a good thing for us. Therefore, in 1999, the city's Shor  and Go Goa  were also developed at  various stages.
