Taapsee Pannu reveals frustration with Dhak Dhak co-producers abandoning the film after recovering costs: “They instead said, ‘Why bother? It’s already made its money’”

Recently, actress Taapsee Pannu expressed dissatisfaction with her production project, 2023's Dhak Dhak. Despite having a talented ensemble cast, the film, which starred Ratna Pathak Shah, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Dia Mirza, and Sanjana Sanghi, had a subpar run in theaters.

Prior to its release, Dhak Dhak's issues began. The trailer was released four days before the movie's October 13, 2023 premiere, so there was virtually no marketing effort. The problems that would plague the film were foreshadowed by this lack of publicity. Pannu, who was also a co-producer on Dhak Dhak, took a drastic step: she deleted all of the film's promotional posts from her social media accounts.

Pannu finally revealed the motivation behind her actions during a recent interview with The Indian Express. It turned out that the co-producers' abandonment of the film after recouping their investment was the source of her frustration. Pannu admitted, "It was a very heartbreaking experience." I didn't go into production for a different career. As an actor, I was doing pretty well.

Pannu emphasized that she went into production to support films in which she was not an actress. She didn't star in the film Dhak Dhak, but it represented this vision. Despite this, the experience left a bad taste in her mouth.

She provided an explanation for the harsh reality that smaller productions face in the film industry. Pannu stated, "Studios recover the money before the film hits theaters if it's not a big-budget film."

There is a cascading effect from this lack of post-production support. Exhibitors become reluctant to screen the film as a result of studios' lack of interest in printing and advertising (P&A). They assign unfavorable show times and theaters because they see it as a niche product with limited commercial appeal. According to reports, Dhak Dhak went through such treatment, and its sudden removals in the middle of the week made it even less likely to attract viewers.

Pannu stated, highlighting the film's difficult start, "We started showing the film 4-5 days after the film's trailer came out." We started getting calls from people promising to help promote it. Pannu felt abandoned by her co-producers, who, according to her, lacked the commitment to see the project through to completion, despite the public's willingness to support the film.

Instead, they stated, "Why bother?" It's as of now brought in its cash and presently it will track down its crowd'," Pannu related, communicating her failure with their disposition.

Be that as it may, a silver lining arose in the midst of the dissatisfaction. Dhak Dhak was supported by the film's four lead actresses, including Pannu herself. Dia Mirza, in an honorable demonstration of fortitude, even offered her home as a scene for limited time interviews with the cast. " I have never seen numerous entertainers taking responsibility for film like that," Pannu said, communicating her pride in being related with such committed associates.

Dhak Dhak tells the story of four ordinary women and their self-discovery journey as they bike from Delhi to Khardung La.
