The issue started when a part of the movie went viral on social media.
In that scene, Ananya's character, Chandni, performs during a college cultural event. The dance combines Bharatanatyam-inspired moves with modern and hip-hop styles. While some people liked the creative approach, many others, especially those who are fans of classical dance, criticized the performance. They said the movements looked stiff and not graceful enough for Bharatanatyam.
The situation got worse because the scene had a big statue of Lord Nataraja in the background.
Some people thought the sequence was a traditional Bharatanatyam performance instead of a mix of styles.
During an interview with the Times of India, Chunky Panday said that the scene was being looked at without understanding the movie's context.
"I think people completely misunderstood it. It was never meant to be pure Bharatanatyam. It was a fusion performance, the type of experimental dance you often see college students do at cultural events," he said.
Chunky also explained that the audience was judging the performance based on traditional classical dance standards.
"People assumed it was traditional Bharatanatyam and started judging it from that lens. But pure Bharatanatyam requires lots of training and years of discipline and precision," he added.
He also talked about how Bharatanatyam is very technical and structured, almost like robotic movements.
"It's a mix of futuristic, advanced dance forms with elements of traditional dance. It's a creative blend, not a classical recital," he said.
Chunky asked the audience to watch the entire film and understand the context before making judgments.
Ananya Panday has not said anything about the controversy so far.
