The movie, featuring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, was chosen by the Film Federation of India from a list of 24 films submitted this year.
This makes it the official representative of India on the global stage of cinema.
This week, the Academy announced the shortlist, and Homebound is one of just 15 international films moving forward toward final nominations for the Best International Feature Film Award.
This marks a big win for Indian cinema as the Oscars approach in March 2026.
Homebound follows the emotional story of two childhood friends who want to become police officers to gain respect and dignity in a system influenced by caste and economic differences.
Producer Karan Johar was very emotional about the film being on the Oscar shortlist.
He shared his feelings on social media, saying, "I am not sure I can express how proud, excited, and thrilled I am with the journey of #HOMEBOUND… all of us at @dharmamovies are lucky to have this proud and important film in our filmography… thank you @neeraj.ghaywan for making so many of our dreams come true… from Cannes to being on the Oscar shortlist, this has been an amazing journey! Love to the entire cast and crew and teams behind this special film!!!!!! Upwards and onwards…"
The film has already gained international attention after its premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, where it received a nine-minute standing ovation.
It also played at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it won the International People's Choice Award as the second runner-up.
Industry experts and moviegoers are happy with Homebound's selection, seeing it as a sign of the strong storytelling coming from Indian cinema.
The cast and crew are excited about the film's Oscar campaign, with many hoping it will be nominated when the final list is announced early next year.
