Anand Gandhi became someone people were watching closely because of his movie Ship Of Theseus in 2013. After that, he worked on Tumbbad in 2018, which was a cult classic. He was listed as the executive producer and creative director of that film. The movie didn't do well when it first came out, but when it was shown again last year, it became one of the top-grossing re-releases. In a special interview with Bollywood Hungama, Anand talked about this horror movie.
In July this year, Anand made a surprising statement, saying he was the director of Tumbbad.
How did Rahi Anil Barve, who was credited as the director, and Sohum Shah, the lead actor and producer, respond to this interview? Did they contact him?
Anand said, "I know it might have sounded shocking in the headline, but from my view, I was just telling about my role in a long and well-documented creative process.
I had stayed quiet for a long time about it, and now I felt it was important to talk about my part in the film that people actually saw."
He added, "Everyone involved has their own feelings about the film and its history.
I don't want to speak for Rahi or Sohum, and I don't want to talk about private chats. My wish is for honest credit on all sides, and for everyone to move forward with respect."
The success of Tumbbad's re-release made the team announce Tumbbad 2.
When asked about his thoughts on the sequel, Anand said, "None of my original creative partners, and I, are involved in Tumbbad 2. Because of that, it's hard for me to see it as a direct follow-up to the film we made together."
He continued, "What I care about is the connection the first film has with its audience.
People have a very personal bond with Tumbbad and what it meant for Indian cinema. My hope is that whatever form Tumbbad 2 takes, it honors that bond and respects the feelings of the fans."
