Malhotra's journey from fashion to film
Manish Malhotra has cemented his reputation as a master of glamour and haute couture over the years. But his foray into the film industry with Saari Mohabbat, which recently premiered at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), revealed his passion for storytelling that goes beyond fashion.
Commenting on the move, Malhotra said, "My dream with Stage 5 was to start a story that was different from what is expected of me." People expected my film to have Kareena (Kapoor Khan) or a glamorous young girl in the lead role. But this is not an extension of my brand. The most important thing is the script.”
Malhotra's debut film Saari Mohabbat, a mediocre thriller starring Radhika Apte, Divyendu and Anurag Kashyap, marked a major departure from his glamorous persona. Directed by Tisca Chopra, the film revolves around the theme of infidelity and cheating.
End of a Dream: Meena Kumari Biopic Shelved
When asked about the status of the Meena Kumari biopic, Malhotra confirmed that he is no longer associated with the project. "I'm not doing any more biopics. I'm going to direct something else. Directing is a dream that is yet to come true," he revealed.
Filmmaking: A natural fit for Malhotra
Though the designer has shelved the biopic, his passion for filmmaking has not waned. "Not all fashion designers have a cinematic sense, but some do." "I've loved films since I was a child, so it came naturally," he says. Malhotra's love for classics like Mughal-e-Azam and the works of Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt influenced his creative work.
Though Malhotra has walked out of the Meena Kumari project, he has more films lined up, including Boon Tikki and Uru Jalur Ishq.
