Sumit Arora decodes VIRAL they/them scene in The Family Man 3: “Srikant Tiwari is NOT mocking Dhriti’s pronouns; he’s a confused small-town father trying to make sense

One of the most anticipated shows ever, Season 3 of *The Family Man*, finally came out on Amazon Prime Video on November 21.
As expected, it was watched a lot and became a big hit online. Bollywood Hungama had a special chat with its dialogue writer, Sumit Arora, about the new season and more.

*The Family Man* Season 3 takes place a few years after the events of Season 2.
The kids have grown up, and the family dynamics have changed. Was Sumit Arora asked to make sure these changes were shown in the dialogues? He answered, "Yes, and I realized it right away. Atharv (Vedant Sinha), for example, is now a grown-up boy, not a teenager like before. Dhriti (Ashlesha Thakur) has also become an adult. The world they're living in is completely different now. This changes how they interact with their parents. That’s why there are new things in their conversations and how they act. I had to keep all that in mind."

Sumit continued, "JK (Sharib Hashmi) has his own problems.
He wants to get married and is into dating. That’s also shown in his relationship with Srikant (Manoj Bajpayee). For example, when he's in a big trouble, he worries about dying alone. In a life-or-death situation, this is what he's most scared of! Srikant gives a funny reply, and that comes out because we need to understand what these characters are going through now, compared to before."

But the scene that everyone talked about was Atharv telling his father that Dhriti’s pronouns are 'they/them' instead of 'she/her.'
The dialogue was nicely written and didn’t hurt anyone, even though it's a sensitive topic.

Sumit explained, "I felt really good about that.
The idea was already in the screenplay; Suman Kumar had written it. For this scene, I put myself in Srikant Tiwari’s position. I'm also from a small town, and I understand where he's coming from. So, if I heard something like that, how would I react? That's how I came up with the line, 'You said they are worried. Who else is worried?' He's just surprised by the whole idea. I don't think he really gets it or accepts it throughout the scene. It doesn’t even make sense to him! So, he’s not making fun of it. He’s just trying to understand. That’s why when he says there's no such thing in Hindi, he replies, 'Shukar hai, Hindi bach gayi!'”

Sumit added, "After all, he's just thinking, 'What's going on here?'
He grew up in Banaras, but his kids were raised in Mumbai. So, we're trying to look at it from that angle too—how differences in upbringing create new situations."

*The Family Man* Season 3 ended with a cliffhanger, and some viewers are upset about it.
When asked about it, Sumit Arora said, "The right people to discuss it would be Raj-DK and Suman. It was their decision to end it like that, and that the story will continue from there. As an audience, I would like to know what happens next in the story. But I guess the decision was made because the story is big and couldn’t be finished in one season."
