Gustaakh Ishq Movie Review: GUSTAAKH ISHQ is a sweet and simple film.

Star Cast: Vijay Varma, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Naseeruddin Shah

Director: Vibhu Puri

Gustaakh Ishq Movie Review Synopsis:
GUSTAAKH ISHQ is a story about poems, heartbreaks, and more.
The story is set in 1998. Pappan, short for Nawabuddin Saifuddin Rehman Rizvi, runs a printing press called Mustaqbil Printing Press in Delhi. His business is struggling, and to save it, his brother Jumman brings in a shady writer named Faruqui. Pappan doesn’t like Faruqui’s work and refuses to print it. Faruqui leaves, but he mentions a poet named Aziz. Pappan’s mother reacts strongly to the name Aziz, which makes him curious. He finds Aziz’s phone number and calls him, hoping to get him to publish his poems. Aziz’s daughter, Mannat, answers. She’s interested in the offer and invites Pappan to visit them in Malerkotla, Punjab. Pappan goes there, meets Mannat, but she tells him her father doesn’t want to publish. Pappan insists and meets Aziz, pretending to be a student and asking for his mentorship. Aziz agrees without knowing Pappan’s true motive. The rest of the story follows their relationship and the journey that ensues.

Gustaakh Ishq Movie Review Synopsis:
The story told by Vibhu Puri and Prasshant Jha is nice and sweet.
The screenplay, with Mitesh Shah as script consultant, is slow and engaging but has a few rough parts. The dialogues, along with the poems by Ashok Mizaj, Umair Najmi, and Vibhu Puri, are the film’s highlights and sound really good. The language is easy to understand, but subtitles should be available in all theaters for those not familiar with classical Urdu.

Vibhu Puri’s direction is simple and well-suited to the story.
The main character is flawed, but not in a bad way. There’s no violence or intense scenes, which makes the film special, especially because it deals with Muslim characters and uses Urdu. The romance develops nicely, but the connection between the student and his teacher is the real standout. Since the film is set before the internet and cell phones, the lack of communication is used effectively. The intermission scene is dramatic, and the scene in Dera Baba Nanak is also impactful.

On the downside, the screenplay is a bit convenient at times.
It’s confusing why Pappan leaves his family in bad financial shape for a long time while he goes to Malerkotla. It’s not clear how he pays for everything. The character of Parvez comes up suddenly and is then forgotten. The second half of the film and the events before the climax are important but are handled a bit awkwardly and quickly, which doesn’t match the film’s overall tone. The songs, for the most part, don’t have much impact, especially since the music was composed by Vishal Bhardwaj, who is known for creating memorable tunes.

Gustaakh Ishq Movie Review Performances:
Vijay Varma is known for playing bad guys, but here he plays a different kind of role, and he does it well.
His acting is on point. Fatima Sana Shaikh handles a tough role with ease, looks great, and holds her own among the other talented actors. Naseeruddin Shah is charming and only he could have played this role in this way. Sharib Hashmi is lovely, but his role could have been more developed. Rohan Verma leaves a strong impression. His character is annoying, which is a good sign because it shows his role is effective. Natasha Rastogi is okay. Shashi Bhushan is wasted in his role. Jaya Bhattacharya, Sameeksha Tripathi, and Faisal Rashid are all good. Zain Durrani, who plays the young Aziz, is impressive and better than his performance in AANKHON KI GUSTAAKHIYAN [2025].

Gustaakh Ishq Movie Music and Other Technical Aspects:
The song "Ul Jalool Ishq" is catchy and stays with you.
However, the other songs like "Chal Musafir," "Shehar Tere," and "Aap Is Dhoop Mein" are forgettable. A film like this should have music that makes an impression, especially considering it was composed by Vishal Bhardwaj. Hitesh Sonik’s background score is good.

Manushnandan’s cinematography is acceptable and beautiful in some moments.
The costumes by Manish Malhotra and Shivank Vikram Kapoor are realistic and remind us of the past. The production design by Madhumita Sen and Ajay Sharma is commendable, but the sets all look similar. Divyashree Samantaray’s editing is appropriate.

Gustaakh Ishq Movie Review Conclusion:
Overall, GUSTAAKH ISHQ is a light and gentle film supported by heartfelt performances from the main cast.
However, due to poor awareness and limited promotion, its reach is likely to be limited at the box office.
